When the words "small bathroom renovations" are uttered, we tend to think one of two things. The first, that someone is making small renovations to a bathroom, and the second, that someone is making renovations to a small bathroom. However, in both cases, people want to create a more relaxing space in their bathrooms, turning it into a place of refuge.
So let's discuss both.
Making small renovations to an existing bathroom is easily done. Usually, this means minimal re-tiling (if any at all), painting (new colors can already do wonders to small spaces), and redecorating. Since the bathroom is small, choosing a light pastel color is important to make it seem bigger. The tiles should match or complement this chosen color, so if you don't plan on re-tiling, take your current tile color into consideration.
Then, redecorate. Small spaces can seem bigger if a large mirror is placed against one of the main walls. If you have a free wall (one without cabinets) you can attach a large mirror that spans the length of the wall. You may also want to consider changing the cabinetry in the bathroom, perhaps investing in one that actually gives you more space for items. High shelves also work well as space savers. Next, ALWAYS change the shower curtain. Doing this, like repainting, changes the feel of the bathroom; the current one is likely to be old anyway. Finally, remember to scrub the bathroom clean after all the work is done. It will make it look shiny and new, and it will relax you when you get the full effect of the change.
Now, making renovations to a small bathroom is a different story. This could mean expanding the bathroom, changing major fixtures, and adding decorative elements. The first things that need to be done (after tearing down and building the walls for expansion, and fixing the piping) are the painting and tiling. You can go ahead and change the entire color scheme. Mosaic tiles are the new craze, but these can be expensive. Mosaic accents, perhaps a foot or two feet of mosaic tiles running along an edge, or right above the sink can be a good compromise. Along with the tiling and painting, major fixtures, such as the bath tub, toilet, shower, etc. need to be put in.
Next, decorate! Lots of bathrooms are made more peaceful and calm with flowers. Put flowers by windows or have a vase by the sink. Scented candles add a sense of tranquility too, especially for those bubble baths! Place candles by the tub or showering area. Choose ones with different heights, and follow the color motif of the bathroom. If it is a very large space, you can add a sitting area by the vanity table and decorate this with some large soft pillows you can recline and rest on after a hot shower. You can also add some art, though keep in mind that the moisture may ruin paintings and photos. If you don't want this to happen, you may consider adding some small porcelain figurines. Plain white or Bisquit figurines often go well with any bathroom. You can line some up on a window sill to add a cute decorative accent.
